Challenge in OLED Display Manufacturing

An active matrix OLED (AM-OLED) display was widely developed because of its superior image quality after the first report of stacked semiconductor device in 1987 , however the amount of AM-OLED display did not readily increase because of its manufacturing difficulty.
JOLED employed a printing technology for the manufacturing of OLED display [2, 3]. Printing is a simple process, and can be performed under atmospheric environment. Red, green, and blue emissive materials can be printed at once; therefore its process steps are around 1/3 of the conventional evaporation processes.
We have started the production of 21.6 inch 4K OLED display employing the printing technology. Stable and precise printing realized excellent imaging quality in spite of high resolution more than 200ppi. This method is capable for highly productive OLED display manufacturing with large mother glass over Gen. 8. We hope our RGB printing method and simple device structure bring an innovation for the OLED display manufacturing.

Toshiaki Arai received his M.E. degree from the University of Electro-Communications and Ph.D. degree from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology.
He joined IBM Japan, Ltd, in 1990 and engaged himself in a-Si TFT development for AM-LCD and AM-OLED display. He joined Sony Corporation in 2004 and engaged himself in microcrystalline-Si and oxide TFT development for AM-OLED display. He transferred to JOLED Inc. in 2015 and engaged himself in backplane development for AM-OLED display. He is currently assigned as a Chief Technologist of JOLED Inc.
He is a program committee member of the Society for Information Display since 2002, and assumed the SID Fellow since 2017.
JOLED was founded and started on January 5th in 2015, with combining the most advanced OLED technologies of SONY and Panasonic in Japan. JOLED has commercialized the world’s first organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel produced by “RGB printing method” on December 5, 2017.
